Why bridesmaid dresses always need altering

Bridal party dresses are ordered against a manufacturer's size chart, and that chart makes one measurement decide the whole dress. If a bridesmaid's bust puts her in a size twelve, she receives a twelve everywhere — waist, hip, length included — regardless of the rest of her.

The result is predictable: dresses that are correct in one place and wrong in three others. Taking them in through the bodice and waist while keeping the neckline sitting properly is the bulk of the work, and it's why nobody should assume their dress will simply fit.
