Wedding dress alterations for Folsom brides.

Folsom is barely twelve minutes east of the shop, and we fit a great many gowns for weddings held around Folsom Lake, in the historic district, and out through El Dorado Hills wine country.

Outdoor and vineyard weddings put particular demands on a gown. A hem set for a ballroom floor drags through grass and gravel; a train that photographs beautifully on a lawn needs a bustle that will survive an evening of dancing on an uneven surface.

We fit for where you're actually getting married, not just for a mirror in the shop. Tell us the venue and the surface and we'll set the hem and build the bustle accordingly.

Everything is done in-house — beadwork, lace, structure — by the same tailor from first fitting to final press.

Fitting a gown for an outdoor wedding

The single most common mistake with an outdoor gown is hemming it as though the ceremony were indoors. On grass, a floor-length hem sinks slightly and picks up everything it touches; on gravel or a vineyard row it frays.

We set outdoor hems a touch shorter at the front and grade them so the silhouette still reads floor-length in photographs. If you're changing surfaces during the day — lawn ceremony, then an indoor reception — we'll plan the bustle so the train is off the ground for the parts that matter.

Bring the actual shoes. A block heel that sinks into turf sits at a different height than the stiletto you tried on at the salon.

Heirloom and restored gowns

We're often asked to bring a mother's or grandmother's gown back into service. Older gowns come with real complications — fabric that has yellowed or weakened, seams that have set, a silhouette that reads dated.

Much of it is recoverable. Bodices can be restructured, skirts reshaped, and dated details removed or replaced while keeping the lace that made the dress worth saving. We'll tell you honestly at the first look what can be done and what can't.

Common questions

Wedding Dress Alterations — questions we're asked

How far is Top Alterations from Folsom?
About 12 minutes. Take Greenback Lane west from Folsom to 8889 Greenback Ln in Orangevale. Parking is directly outside.
Can you hem a gown for an outdoor or vineyard wedding?
Yes, and we fit it differently than an indoor gown. Outdoor hems are set slightly shorter and graded so the dress still reads floor-length in photos without dragging through grass or gravel. Bring the shoes you'll actually wear — heel height on turf changes the measurement.
Can you restore my mother's or grandmother's wedding dress?
Usually, yes. Heirloom gowns can be restructured, resized, and restyled while preserving the lace and detail worth keeping. Fabric that has weakened or yellowed with age limits some options, so bring it in and we'll give you an honest assessment before quoting.
