Jeans hemming, original hem kept.

Anyone can cut an inch off a pair of jeans. Keeping the original hem — the faded, distressed edge the denim came with — so the jeans don't look shortened is a different job.

We hem denim for the Sacramento region with the original hem retained where you want it, which keeps the wear pattern and the factory stitching intact at the bottom of the leg.

We also taper, adjust waists, replace zippers, and repair the tears that denim inevitably develops at the pocket and the crotch.

Denim work is fast. Most hems are ready within a few days, and we'll tell you at drop-off exactly when.

Original hem retained

The faded factory edge is removed, the length taken from above, and the original hem reattached.

Original hem versus a standard hem

A standard hem cuts the leg to length and sews a new edge. On plain trousers that's invisible. On denim it isn't — the factory hem carries fading, stitching in a contrasting thread, and often a heavier wash at the edge, none of which a new hem reproduces.

An original hem takes the length out above the existing edge and reattaches the original hem underneath. The jeans keep their factory look and nobody can tell they were shortened.

It costs a little more and it's worth it on any pair where the hem has visible character. On plain dark denim with no fading, a standard hem is fine and cheaper — we'll tell you which yours calls for.

Repairing denim rather than replacing it

Denim fails in predictable places: the crotch seam, the back pockets, and the knees. All three are repairable, and on a well-fitting pair it's almost always the better decision.

Crotch blowouts are reinforced from behind and restitched. Pocket corners are rebuilt. Knees can be patched from the inside so the repair reads as wear rather than as a patch, or left visible if that's the look you want.

Common questions

Jeans Hemming and Denim Alterations — questions we're asked

Can you hem jeans and keep the original hem?
Yes. We remove the factory hem, take the length out above it, and reattach the original edge — so the fading, contrast stitching, and wear at the bottom of the leg stay exactly as they were.
How much does jeans hemming cost?
A standard hem is one of the least expensive jobs we do. An original-hem finish costs somewhat more because it's more work. Call 916-988-8822 or bring them in and we'll quote on the spot.
How long does it take to hem jeans?
Usually a few days. Denim moves quickly through the shop, and we'll give you a firm date when you drop them off.
Can you taper jeans that are too wide in the leg?
Yes. We taper along the inseam so the new line follows the original cut of the jean rather than fighting it, which is what keeps a tapered pair looking like it was made that way.
Can you repair a blown-out crotch or torn pockets?
Yes, and on a pair that fits well it's usually the better decision. Crotch seams are reinforced from behind and restitched, pocket corners are rebuilt, and knees can be patched from the inside so the repair reads as wear.
