Suits · Sacramento

Suit alterations for Sacramento.

An off-the-rack suit is cut for an average nobody actually is. The difference between a suit that looks expensive and one that looks borrowed is almost entirely what happens after it leaves the store.

We fit suits all week for the Sacramento region — Capitol and legislative staff, downtown law and finance, real estate, and everyone with a wedding, an interview, or a date on the calendar that simply won't wait.

Nadia has been tailoring menswear for over thirty years. Jacket work — the tapering, the sleeves, the shoulders — is where experience actually shows, and it's the part most shops either avoid or get wrong.

We're at 8889 Greenback Ln in Orangevale, inside Sacramento County — ten to twenty minutes from most of Sacramento and roughly twenty-five from downtown up Highway 50 or I-80. Parking is directly outside, with no garage to navigate.

What a properly fitted suit actually looks like

Most men have never seen themselves in a suit that fits, so it helps to know what we're aiming for.

The jacket collar sits flat against your shirt collar with no gap. The shoulder seam ends where your shoulder ends, not past it. The jacket closes without pulling an X across the button. Roughly half an inch of shirt cuff shows below the jacket sleeve. The trousers break cleanly on the shoe — a slight fold, not a puddle — and the seat is smooth rather than sagging or straining.

Almost all of that is adjustable after purchase. Buy for the shoulders and the chest, which are the hardest and most expensive to change, then have everything else brought to you.

The alterations worth doing, in order

If you're doing one thing to a suit, hem the trousers and set the sleeve length. That alone accounts for most of the visible difference between fitted and unfitted.

If you're doing three, add the jacket taper. Bringing the side seams and center back in removes the boxy excess through the waist that makes an off-the-rack jacket read as generic.

Beyond that: the seat and thigh of the trousers, the jacket length, and — if it's genuinely off — the shoulder. Shoulder work is the most involved alteration in menswear because the sleeve has to come off and the whole structure reset, but on a suit worth keeping it transforms the garment.

A note on sleeve buttons

If your jacket has working buttonholes on the cuffs — real, functioning surgeon's cuffs — the sleeve can't simply be shortened from the bottom without cutting through them.

In that case we shorten from the shoulder instead, which is more involved but preserves the detail. It's worth knowing before you buy: a jacket with working cuffs is harder and more expensive to alter, so buy one closer to your sleeve length.

Common questions

Suit Alterations — questions we're asked

How much do suit alterations cost in Sacramento?
It depends on what's being done. A trouser hem and sleeve shortening is a modest job; a full fitting with jacket taper, sleeves, shoulders, and trousers is a larger one. We quote after seeing the suit on you and don't begin work until you've agreed the price. Call 916-988-8822.
How long do suit alterations take?
Typically about a week for a standard fitting. Express and same-day work is available by arrangement — if you have an interview, a wedding, or a date that can't be moved, call the shop and we'll tell you honestly what's achievable.
Can a suit jacket's shoulders be altered?
Yes. Shoulder adjustment is the most involved alteration in menswear — the sleeve comes off and the structure is reset — which is why many shops won't attempt it. We do, and on a suit worth keeping it makes more difference than every other alteration combined.
Can you take in a suit jacket that's too big?
Yes. Jackets are taken in through the side seams and the center back seam, which removes the boxy excess through the waist. How much can come off depends on the seam allowance and the position of the pockets and vents — we'll tell you the limit when we see it.
Should I buy a suit big and have it taken in?
Buy for the shoulders and the chest — those are the hardest and most expensive things to change. Everything else, the waist, sleeves, trouser length, seat and taper, can be brought to you. A suit that fits the shoulders and is loose elsewhere is a good candidate; one that's tight in the shoulders isn't.
Do you alter suits bought online?
Yes, and a lot of what we see now is bought online. Bring it in as it arrived and we'll assess what's workable and quote before starting.
