Leather is the work most alterations shops turn away. It needs different needles, different thread, different machines, and a tailor who understands that every stitch line is permanent — leather doesn't forgive a seam that's been opened and moved.

We repair, reline, resize, and reshape leather and suede jackets for clients across the Sacramento region. Motorcycle jackets, vintage bombers, designer outerwear, and coats that have been worn hard for twenty years and are worth another twenty.
Most of what comes in isn't beyond saving. Failed zippers, torn linings, split seams, worn cuffs, and jackets that no longer fit are all routine.

Leather and suede need specific machines, needles, and thread. We have them and forty-five years of using them.
Permanent by nature
Leather holds every needle mark, so seams are planned before they're opened. There's no second attempt.
Worth saving
Failed zippers, torn linings, split seams, and a fit that's changed are all recoverable on a decent jacket.
The most common leather repairs
Zippers fail first, and they're the most frequent job we see. A worn-out main zipper on an otherwise sound jacket is a straightforward replacement, and matching the hardware weight to the jacket matters as much as the repair itself — a light zipper on a heavy motorcycle jacket will fail again.
Linings go next. A lining that's shredded at the shoulders or torn through the sleeves can be replaced entirely, and it's usually the difference between a jacket that feels finished and one that feels finished with.
Then seams and fit. Split seams are repaired along the original stitch line where possible. Resizing is doable but has limits — leather can be taken in more readily than let out, because letting out exposes old needle holes.
Vintage and inherited jackets
We're regularly handed a leather jacket that belonged to somebody's father, and those jobs get treated accordingly. Old leather can be dry, stiff, or weakened at the stress points, and the honest answer is sometimes that a seam won't hold a repair.
More often it will. Vintage jackets were generally built better than modern ones, and a bomber or motorcycle jacket from decades ago frequently has plenty of service left once the lining, zipper, and cuffs are addressed.

- Can a leather jacket be taken in or resized?
- Yes, within limits. Leather can be taken in fairly readily through the seams. Letting it out is harder, because the old stitch line leaves permanent needle holes that show once the seam moves. Bring it in and we'll tell you exactly what's achievable on your jacket.
- Can you replace a broken zipper on a leather jacket?
- Yes — it's the most common leather repair we do. We match the replacement hardware to the weight of the jacket, which matters: a light zipper fitted to a heavy motorcycle jacket will fail again quickly.
- Can you reline a leather jacket?
- Yes, including full relining. A shredded or torn lining is very often the only thing standing between a tired-looking jacket and years more wear.
- Do you work on suede as well as leather?
- Yes. Suede needs an even lighter hand than leather because the nap marks easily, but repair, reshaping, and resizing are all possible.
- Another shop said my leather jacket couldn't be repaired. Should I bring it in?
- Yes. Most shops decline leather because they lack the machines and the experience, not because the jacket is beyond help. We'll give you an honest assessment — and if it genuinely can't be saved, we'll tell you that too.
